Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) said last week it had requested the extradition of fugitive banker Mukhtar Ablyazov from the UK.
"We have sent a petition to the UK for the arrest of Mukhtar Ablyazov and [his] extradition to Kazakhstan," Interfax quoted a spokesman for the PGO. The British government has reportedly not yet replied to the extradition request.
The PGO has filed 90 charges against the former CEO of the BTA Bank and his alleged accomplices and is seeking recovery of $7.5 billion.
BTA's current management has also brought fraud charges against Ablyazov in British and Russian courts. In 2010, a British court of appeal upheld a High Court ruling that a receivership order be placed on Ablyazov's assets and his passport be held.
In Russia, Ablyazov has been charged on four counts of financial crime, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued.
